Hearing is the best-developed sense in cats. Cats can hear sounds as high as 64 kHz, compared to 20 kHz for humans and 45 kHz for dogs. They are most sensitive to sounds in the 8 kHz range, which is about the pitch of a high-pitched human voice. This is why cats respond better to high-pitched voices than normal-range voices. Because they can move their ears up to 180° with great precision and independently of each other, they are able to locate sounds with great accuracy, to within 3 inches for sounds 3 feet away.
